As Endnote is desktop based, it is essential to keep a back-up version of your library in a location other than your PC desktop. If your PC crashes and you have no back-up you will lose all your references and attachments.

Creating a back up is easy and should be carried out each time you make a significant change to your library. Have only one back-up library and update this version when required.

To back up your library references and file attachments:

  1. Go to your EndNote library

  2. Click on File and select Compressed Library (.enlx)

  3. Select "Create" and “With File Attachments.”

  4. Select “All References in Library.” Click Next.

  5. Save your Endnote Compressed Library to a location other than your PC or your networked location.

Please note:

  • The 'Save a copy' option in the Endnote File menu will only save your references, attachments such as PDFs will not be saved. The Compressed Library option is preferable.
  • EndNote libraries larger than 4 gigabytes (GB) or 65,535 files (64 K) cannot be compressed

This is your back up library.

To restore an Endnote Library from a back up library:

If your Endnote library is corrupted, or you lose your library, you will need to have a new, empty Endnote library installed. From this new library:

  1. Go to File

  2. Click open

  3. Click Open library.

  4. Select your Endnote compressed library and click Open.

The back up library will then be uploaded to your new Endnote library platform
