What is an article processing charge?

When publishing a paper, you may be asked to pay an article processing charge.

An article processing charge (or APC) is a fee charged by some publishers of open access journals for the publication of an article.  Payment of an article processing charge covers the administrative costs related to publication and also allows the article to be provided online free of charge.

Payment of article processing charges is usually the responsibility of the institution, or funding body if applicable.

If you or your work area is publishing regularly with a publisher who charges APCs, it may be possible to receive a discount on article processing charges via an institutional membership or via a pre-paid fee; contact the publisher in the first instance.

As article processing charges can vary from journal to journal, the library can provide advice on which journals charge APCs, and provide contact details for publishers.
