EndNote Online is a cloud-based version of EndNote which allows you to access, manage and share your references from any PC, Mac, tablet or device connected to the Internet.  EndNote Online also works with the Cite While You Write Word plug-in, even on PCs which do not have EndNote 20 installed, such as QUB’s Student Computing Centre PCs.

In order to use EndNote Online, you must firstly register for an account.  There are three types of EndNote Online accounts:

If you do not have EndNote 20 installed on your PC/Mac, it is recommended that you create an EndNote Online institutional account via QUB’s Web of Science subscription.  To do so, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to MyEndnoteOnline.
  2. Click on ‘Register’ and complete the fields to create an EndNote Online institutional account, or if you have already created an account with Web of Science or ResearcherID, you can use these credentials to login to EndNote Online without registering.
  3. Once you have registered, you can then enter your username and password via  http://myendnoteweb.com to login to EndNote Online.  Once you have logged in, you can then click on the 'Downloads' tab to download the Cite While You Write plug-in:

In order to keep your EndNote Online institutional account active whilst you are at the University, you must log into EndNote online from a campus PC or through the Web of Science database at least once within a year after creating the account.  If you do not, your account level will be changed to EndNote Online Basic, with a limited number of reference styles.

If you do have EndNote 20 installed on your PC/Mac, you can create an EndNote Online account with unlimited storage, or upgrade your existing EndNote Online Basic account to one with unlimited storage.  Accounts synchronised to EndNote X9 are active for 2 years from the first sync with EndNote 20.

  1. Open your EndNote Library

  2. Click on ‘Edit’ > ‘Preferences’ > ‘Sync’

  3. Click ‘Enable Sync’:

  1. In the ‘EndNote Login’ window, click on ‘Sign Up’:

  1. In the ‘EndNote Registration’ window, enter an email address that you would like to use with EndNote Online – this does not have to be a QUB email address.  Re-enter the email address, then click ‘Submit’:

  1. In the next window, enter your first name, last name, password, retype password, then, if you agree to the EndNote End User License Agreement, click ‘I Agree’.

  1. The next window should read ‘EndNote registration is complete’ – click ‘Done’:

  1. Your EndNote Sync preferences will be updated to include the EndNote Account Credentials you have just created – click ‘OK’.   If Sync Automatically is selected, EndNote will automatically run the sync feature every 15 minutes.

  1.  To manually sync your EndNote library to your newly created EndNote account, click on ‘Tools’ > ‘Sync’.  You will be asked if you wish to create a compressed library backup (recommended).  Once the sync process has completed, you can then use your EndNote account credentials to access your EndNote Library online via www.myendnoteweb.com.
