Born in Ulster and a Queen’s graduate, Sir Robert Hart (1835-1911) was Inspector General of the Imperial Customs, Peking 1863-1908. A key figure in China’s 19th century history and its relations with the West, it is impossible to write a history of the late Qing Empire without reference to Hart. The extensive Hart Collection at Special Collections & Archives is a key resource for researchers, a listing of the collection is available here.
