What is Gold Open Access?

The alternative to ‘green’ open access is ‘gold’ open access. Gold open access means that the published version of the research article is open access directly from the journal—the reader does not need to pay to read the article. However researchers, with the help of their institution, will usually need to pay an article processing charge (APC) in order to go the Gold Open Access route.
