The CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) licence held by AFBI covers all AFBI staff, including temporary workers and external consultants.

These persons can copy from books and journals from published in the UK and 36 other countries.  Please note that not all content is covered by the license - always use the CLA search tool to determine if the title you wish to copy from is covered by the licence.

Copies must be only be taken from a title ‘owned’ by AFBI i.e. a book in stock or a journal subscription, and which is covered by the CLA licence.

Copies must not exceed two articles from any one journal issue, or 5% (whichever is greater) for each separate occasion and purpose.  From books, only one chapter from a book, or 5% (whichever is greater) is permitted to be copied - again, for each separate occasion and purpose.

Copies may be:

  • distributed in paper format, by email or by post.
  • stored by an individual on hard drive, server area, memory stick or similar.
  • stored on central server area on a project basis indefinitely – but only accessible by secure login by staff on that project.
  • stored on the AFBI intranet for up to 30 days.

Please note that this information is intended as guidance rather than legal advice.  Please contact library staff if you have any further questions.
