What is Open Access?
Open access is a publishing model whereby articles are published freely online with little or no restrictions on use. There are two types of open access:
Green open access
The author publishes in a traditional journal, and also deposits the article (usually the preprint or postprint) in an institutional or subject repository, thereby making the article freely available online. The SHERPA/RoMEO web site is a quick and easy way to find out if a publisher allows self-archiving of articles.
Gold open access
The author publishes in an open access journal and the article is made freely available via the publisher or journal website. Some open access journals may charge a per-article fee known as an article processing charge to publish the article.
Some key benefits of publishing via open access are:
- increased accessibility for your article/research
- greater exposure and potential impact for both your research and research profile
- increased visibility amongst community of potential collaborators within your field
